Church&State: The Local Media Hackathon

Join us in Philadelphia September 26  - 28 for a hackathon that brings together media and business communities to disrupt the business of local media.

We'll kickoff on Friday, September 26 with drinks, networking and idea brainstorming, followed by two full days of hacking.

See you there!

Email events@technical.ly for questions or concerns!

**Breakfast & Lunch provided for each day of Hacking!

Why Church&State?

It’s been a common refrain in newsrooms of the last half-century that the editorial and business departments—which respectively, report hard-hitting news and generate revenue for that very operation—act much like the storied separation of Church and State. The allegory suggests an important divide between each that still demands a deep respect for the other. But new technologies have also created opportunities for business and editorial teams in media to collaborate toward a better end—whether that’s making sponsored content more transparent for readers, de-siloing data so that publications can better serve their audiences, or producing content with advertisers that want to strengthen reporting on important topics.

Who Should Attend?
News and media industry teams. Journalists, business development leads, publishers, product developers, sales teams, marketing teams, events production teams and coders!

We want you to bring your own ideas and challenges to the table, but here are some ideas to help you brainstorm:
1) Making Native Advertising more transparent
2) Tools for editorial data input that respects editorial relationships
3) Data collection that bridges editorial and sales
4) Customizing key performance metrics like Cost of Reader Acquisition, Cost of Lead Acquisition and Cost of Customer Acquisition
5) Turning editorial content into structured data
6) Generating revenue with mobile news

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is traditionally an event at which software developers and others come together to build quick, experimental apps, sites and other projects, or hacks. You don't have to be a coder to take place, though. Any creative approach to an existing problem that can be tested, trialed and launched in a short period of time -- a website, a social media campaign, a new process for an old idea -- is welcome!
